3 Things You NEED to Know Before Buying A Synthetic Wig

Need to upgrade your look … fast?

Many people love the idea of synthetic wigs, as they are a quick and luxurious way to switch up your look, plus they tend to be less expensive than human hair units and require less maintenance. Advances in wig technology mean that we can produce synthetic wigs that are comparable to those made with human hair; soft, moveable and gorgeously styled. Our synthetic pieces are made from soft, touchable fibers and have a custom-plucked hairline, so they not only look, but feel way better than any synthetic wig you’ve ever seen.

That being said, for people that new to the world of wigs – or even those who aren’t! – there are some pretty common mistakes we see when it comes to purchasing and caring for synthetic wigs. Here’s how to get the most out of yours:

1. Don’t go for the cheapest option

Sure, it’s true that in general synthetic wigs are less expensive than those made with human hair, but a quality synthetic wig is still a bit more of an investment upfront than a cheap one. As with almost anything, you get what you pay for. There is a time and a place for a $20 wig, but hold it up next to a quality synthetic unit and you will notice a major difference.

Cheap synthetic wigs are coarser to the touch, have a distinctive, brassy sheen, and, as they’re not handmade, they’re often a one-size-fits-all model. Sometimes this leads to a weird fit that is extremely, well, wig-like. The whole point of investing in a high-quality synthetic unit is to have it look as natural as possible.

The other problem with cheaper wigs is that they tend to wear out more easily, which means you’re stuck buying new ones more often. A quality unit – if cared for – can last much longer, meaning that overall it’s actually a better investment.

2. Take proper care of your synthetic wig

Just because it’s not real doesn’t mean you get to slack on care! One of the benefits of buying a synthetic hairpiece is that it does, in fact, require less maintenance than some of the human hair versions. But listen, just because you think you might not need it until next Halloween doesn’t mean it’s a good idea to chuck your wig in a closet and forget about it, especially considering we just talked about it as an investment … mmmmkay?

Here’s the deal. Brush your wig out gently with a wide-tooth comb. Take advantage of our free silk storage bag – which come with every wig purchase – and keep it contained in there until your next use. You can even store it in a loose braid, which reduces tangles.

The more you wash your synthetic wig, the more the fibres will dry out, so we recommend washing it only every 6 or 8 wearings. Make sure you wash with cold water only, use wig-friendly shampoo and conditioner, and blot dry gently. You also want to make sure you let it dry completely before storing it. Ideally, let it dry naturally on a wig stand so the air can circulate throughout, although in a pinch you can also place it over something similarly-shaped, like an empty vase.

Because even quality synthetic fibres are a bit different than natural hair, we recommend not using hair product on your synthetic pieces. Things like dry shampoo, hairspray, gel or oil will build up and shorten the lifespan of the fibres.

3. Use a wig cap

Most synthetic wigs – including ours - come “ready to wear,” but there are a few ticks and trips you might want to pay attention to before you run out the door. Firstly, it’s a great idea to use a wig cap. We include not one but two complimentary wig caps with each purchase. A wig cap is made of mesh or cotton and it helps provide a barrier between your scalp and the wig. Not only does it absorb sweat, but it helps contain any loose flyaway hair so it’s easier to put your wig on and provides a smoother look altogether. It also helps prolong the life of your wig, as sweat and oil buildup can be damaging.

If you find your wig still isn’t snug enough or is putting pressure in a strange place, you can also find gel-filled headbands, which are designed for just this purpose, or a wig gripper, which is a textured headband designed to give your wig extra “grip” around the hairline. Not only can these help you customize your fit a bit more, but they add comfort too, which is a huge bonus if you’re going to be wearing your new wig for an extended period of time.

Our synthetic wigs come with an adjustable lace cap and clips attached, giving you even more options for a snug, realistic and customizable fit, whether you’re hitting the club or the runway.
